A place for stories about chronic illness, disability, mental health, and neurodivergence.

Submissions opening soon!

Hello, Knee Brace Family!

Previously, we put out our accepted submissions on a rolling basis. To be honest, this system was not very sustainable. We’re now publishing in issues, with our first expected to drop in February! We’re also excited to announce that each issue will now have a theme, although we will still accept a small number of non-themed pieces.

Knee Brace will still be focused on chronic illness, disability, and mental illness. Now our issues will have an extra layer to them, a unifying theme across all of the stories, while still centering underserved and under-heard creators. We invite our submitters to submit stories that do not necessarily center around chronic illness, disability, and mental illness. Our lives are wide and varied, and our art is too. It’s our mission to provide space for the voices of this community for any stories you want to tell.

The theme for our first official issue is “Darkness.” This winter, we felt this was a natural theme. The nights are longer, and there’s a lot of darkness that has nothing to do with the sun going down. We want to know how you feel in the dark and the ways in which you’re finding light. Submissions will open on December 15.

Please follow along with us on Instagram as we share inspiration for this upcoming issue.

As a personal aside, you’re hearing from the new editor-in-chief of Knee Brace, Allison Araya DeBusk. I’m proud to be here with all of you, and I can’t wait to see what you submit!
