Not to stumble, to get to tell you something simple
-A line from the poem “The Last Romantic” by John Ashbery.
Surefooted is uncomplicated.
At least, illusions of stability are uncomplicated.
Something simple is something simplified,
at least, a denial of systems, a blindness to surroundings.
A network untied. Adornments unlaced.
At least, statements without caveats. No second attempts.
Unedited, such that unedited is indistinguishable from improvised.
At least, without guile to diminish the sentiment with revisionism.
Stumble through obstacles,
I will draw you some directions and a simple map.
Stumble over your words,
I will tell you the gist I heard.
Stumble over a clue,
I will rearrange the mystery so that it makes sense.
Stumble through the door,
Hello, I will say,
At least, I will say,
reductively,
it is what it is.
This axiom of ours, whatever it is,
that separates the verb to get
from the verb to get to
the future is assured to the self-assured.
