Heel

He runs back and forth along the fence,
barking at people of whom he’s unsure.
He frantically dives deep in the pool,
doggy paddles his heart out,
and leaps back into the yard.
He doesn’t know how to heel.

She runs back and forth around the room,
trying to sound so sure of herself.
She always dives in with both feet,
to rescue hopeless cases she calls friends.
She leaps into helping, longing for validation.
She doesn’t know how to heal.
